Impact Invest 4 Health in Africa (II4A) PBO

OBJECTIVES

THE PBO (Public Benefit Organisation)

To create holistic change with focus on all aspects of human life, in particular relating to the educational, medical, physical and mental well-being of people. Community development for people in need.

The activities through which the objectives of the PBO shall be achieved will include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • The promotion of community based projects relating to self-help, empowerment, and capacity building skills development.
  • The provision of training, support or assistance to community-based projects contemplated in the objectives set out in the PBO deed of trust.
  • The prevention of infectious diseases, and the provision of educational programs relating to epidemics and pandemics such as COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), and other preventable diseases.
  • The provision of Primary Health Education, Sexual Education, Family Planning, and prevention of Gender-Based Violence.

Current and Active projects

Safe Travel To School

As our children return to school, there has been a very large sector that has not received Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and those are our invaluable learner transporters. Learner transporters are responsible for safely transporting over 80 000 in the Western Cape to and from school each day. Without adequate protection from Covid-19 it will make both drivers and children vulnerable to the Coronavirus. To help in their plight we have joined The Safe Travel To School (STTS) project to raise funds for PPE packs that will last each learner transporter and the children they transport safe for two months (after which we will provide top up packs). Each pack includes: a thermometer, hand sanitizer, surface sanitizer, reusable masks and a spray bottle. Each learner transporter transports on average 15 children to and from school per day and each kit will last two months. Covid-19 Pandemic Prevention

COVID-19 spreads primarily from person to person. Fighting this disease is our joint responsibility. Protect yourself and others by making these 6 simple precautions your new habits: Clean your hands often Cough or sneeze in your bent elbow – not your hands! Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth Limit social gatherings and time spent in crowded places Avoid close contact with someone who is sick Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

Internship Training For Medical Receptionist

Youth unemployment in South Africa has risen to 59% in the first quarter of 2020, according to Stats SA. Of the approximately 20 million of South Africa’s young people, more than 11 million are unemployed.  
 
Our Internship Programme for medical receptionist offers a 3 month structured programme comprising of practical on-the-job training and coaching for the unemployed, with the objective of providing workplace exposure to suitably qualified candidates.

  • A certificate of completion at the end of the programme

Gender-Based Violence Intervention

Gender-based (GBV) is a profound and widespread problem in South Africa impacting on almost every aspect of society.
 
Up to 40% South African women have experienced emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse in their lifetime.
Addressing root causes of GBV:
 

  • Empowering women and children
  • Playing a greater role in helping to challenge patriarchy and toxic relationships
  • Develop livelihoods strategies to reflect on social norms around gender and the use of violence
  • Discussions around the different types of violence affecting the participants personally and their communities
  • Creating awareness of existing laws protecting the rights and dignity of women and children
  • Educate and empower women on how NOT to become a victim of Gender-based Violence
  • Self-defense for women

Our Team

Dr Cyril Parker ​

MBChB (Wits), BSc (Wits), Diploma in Anesthesia (SA), FRACGP (Australia), ACRRM (Australia), Certificate in Dermatology (Monash, Australia)

Dr Cyril Parker graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1981. He obtained his Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) from the College of Medicine in 1984 (SA).

Dr Parker worked at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto before establishing the first one-stop Primary Healthcare facility in a rural area in Ennerdale in the South of Johannesburg.

With extensive experience in primary healthcare in both rural and urban settings, Dr Parker travelled abroad where he worked in primary healthcare settings in  New Zealand and Australia with a keen emphasis on prevention.

He obtained the Fellowship of the Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 1998 and the Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) in 1999. Dr Cyril Parker also acquired a Certificate in Dermatology from the Australian College of Medicine. 

Upon his return to South Africa in 2006, he founded Simunye Primary Healthcare and Simunye Circumcisions Centres in Cape Town. He is the lead developer of innovative medical Circumcision devices.

Dr Cyril Parker has more than 30 years of experience in Primary Healthcare on local and international levels in his role as founder of the PBO Impact Invest 4 Health In Africa.

Prof Peter Millard​

MD, PhD, Physician, Medical Director of Seaport Community Health Center

Dr. Millard is a general family physician with a special interest in infectious diseases.

I am a family physician and epidemiologist and have spent my career teaching, doing clinical work, and doing clinical research. I am originally from the Greater Portland area of Maine. I graduated from Amherst College, completed medical school at the University of Vermont, did my residency in Family Medicine in Bangor and my residency in Preventive Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC.

After finishing my training in Family Medicine, my wife Emily and I worked for 3 years in a hospital in rural Zimbabwe, where I became interested in public health. Afterward, I got my PhD in epidemiology from UNC-Chapel Hill and worked for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Epidemic Intelligence Service. While at UNC, I began to do clinical AIDS care during the most difficult phase of the HIV epidemic, when there were many cases and no effective treatments.

Subsequently, I was a faculty member in the Family Medicine Residency Program at Eastern Maine Medical Center for 13 years and taught epidemiology at the University of Maine.

Dr Elisabeth Pillgrab-Parker​

PhD (Klagenfurt Austria), MA (Vienna, Austria), Diploma in Business Management

Dr Elisabeth Parker graduated with a PhD in Philosophy in Austria in 1991. She then moved to Australia where she established a successful career in Pedagogy and Business management.

In Australia she held positions such as Head of Department of Music Pedagogy at the Australian National University (ANU), lecturer at the Catholic University Canberra, Sydney University / Conservatorium of Music, and University of Technology Sydney / Kuring-gai Campus. During her career as a lecturer, she worked as a lead coach for Opera Australia in Sydney. 

After moving to South Africa in 2006, Dr Elisabeth Parker lectured at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for 18 months. Subsequently, she embarked on a career in Healthcare consulting and Business management.

Dr Elisabeth Parker is the co-founder and operations director of Simunye Primary Healthcare and the Simunye Circumcisions Centres in Cape Town, established in 2006.

Dr E Parker is a researcher and the co-developer of Male Surgical-Assist Circumcision instruments, for which she effectively coordinates clinical trials.

Dr E Parker’s international experience and local expertise is vital in establishing and managing further projects of excellence, all in the field of preventative healthcare, health awareness, training and education.

She is co-founder of the PBO Impact Invest 4 Health In Africa, initating various community based projects, impacting Prevention of disease and Public Health.

Dr Norman Goldstuck​

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Stellenbosch

Originally from South Africa. Graduated with a medical degree  from the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, and completed Diploma in Family planning at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London, England, in 1975Spent his career teaching, doing clinical work and  clinical research in Canada, UK, and South Africa. After finishing his training, he worked in the Pharmaceutical industry for 15 years.
